As part of a R&D and Consulting commision from H3 we devised a flexible membrane made possible by a material embedded joint.

The extents of the services included:
form-finding according to site constraints and client specifications
optimisations and nesting regarding material use and waste
fabrication files

The brief was to design and develop a modular assembly that would convey the impression of a breathing, pulsating organism.

Taking inspiration from sea creatures - a computationally genereated low poly organism “breathed” life from the ceiling of the exhibition space.

Composed of around 1000 individual elements, the design overcame fabrication and time related restrictions by devising an assembly method that required three steps. Articulations between elements were made possible by custom, material embedded joints.
