Pulse

Project Type: Kinetic Installation / New Media Environment / Living Architecture

Materials: Laser-cut PET Sheets, Wood Boards, Metallic Substructure, LED Fixtures

Keywords: Material-Embedded Flexural Joints, Parametric Membrane, Bio-morphic Robotics

Pulse is an architectural intervention that manifests as a breathing, bio-morphic organism suspended within the exhibition space. Commissioned as a specialized R&D and computational design inquiry for H3, the project focuses on the development of a high-density flexible membrane capable of translating mechanical kinetic input into organic, rhythmic motion.

Client: Kaustik(RO) & H3(RO)

Project Date: 09.2019

Size: 2500x1200x500 mm

The design is a computationally generated "low-poly" anatomy inspired by the fluid dynamics of marine invertebrates. The primary innovation lies in a modular assembly of approximately 1,000 individual PET elements, articulated through a system of custom, material-embedded joints. This "living" skin overcomes traditional fabrication constraints by utilizing an integrated hinge logic, allowing the flat-packed components to achieve complex volumetric expansion and contraction.

The design process makes use of a simulated “flock” of boids circling a virtual “food source”.
The resulting trails are discretised as to accomodate a limited number of angles in order to facilitate fabrication. The instructions for bending the aluminium pipes are generated algorithmically and each unique piece is checked for deviations using custom CNC routed jigs.

The technical scope involved rigorous form-finding to reconcile the ceiling-mounted site constraints with the mechanical requirements of the kinetic system. Through advanced nesting strategies and material optimization, the project synthesized a complex structural behavior into a streamlined three-step assembly protocol, turning a technical challenge into a seamless, pulsating spatial experience.

Fabrication: Kaustik(RO)

Pulse was showcased @ BINAR exhibition in Bucharest (2019)
