Specimen 001 is an interactive kinetic sculpture that explores a speculative mechanical symbiote fused with a decomposing log. The hybrid piece examines ecosystems on the brink of collapse, proposing a future where degraded natural elements require synthetic prosthetics to survive. Fused to its host, the creature acts as a protective mechanism: upon sensing human proximity through an integrated ultrasonic sensor, a microcontroller actuates six servomotors that animate pairs of 3D-printed fronds, creating a defensive rattling reflex to ward off potential threats to the log's microbial flora.

The fabrication process relied on a digital workflow to achieve precise integration with the organic host. The log was first 3D scanned via photogrammetry to generate an accurate volumetric model. Custom FDM 3D-printed inserts were then digitally designed to conform to the log's irregular contours, housing the internal electronics, servomotors, and mechanical joints.

By blurring the line between biological matter and robotic intervention, the sculpture confronts the human/nature dichotomy and questions our passive relationship with a rapidly changing environment.
