Generative Design/Digital Fabrication for a

Volcano

A large-scale computational design and digital fabrication project developed as part of an immersive attraction for an amusement park. Contracted by Kaustik, Sebastian designed the computational pipeline and outer hull geometry for a massive interactive volcano prop, integrating organic aesthetics with complex fabrication parameters.

The final form was derived through a procedural design workflow that generated and evaluated hundreds of iterations. The chosen geometry balanced site constraints, structural support requirements, and stock material efficiency. The outer shell was segmented into families of 3D panels categorized by planar proportions, depth, tilt, and structural integrity to simplify handling and assembly.




The fabrication workflow relied on a hybrid machining strategy: individual styrofoam panels were rough-cut using a hot-wire system to minimize machining time, followed by robotic arm milling driven by custom G-code. Once assembled, coated in resin, and finished, the hull was integrated with smoke machines, sound systems, and interactive electronics engineered by H3 to deliver a dynamic, multi-sensory experience.
